The Importance of Press Brake Repair and Maintenance

Hydraulic press brakes in this age offer a wide range of capacities and come with the most advanced options. While they are now more capable than before, press brake repair and maintenance are still necessary just like the older designs to make sure that they perform best. Doing such doesn’t need to be a big deal, especially that they often simple and quick. Below are some steps to apply that will help make a huge difference in the wear and tear of the system, lifespan of your press brake, and in its bending performance.

1. Take a Look Around

When performing a brake press repair and maintenance procedure, even the smallest details should not be missed. You can start by taking a look around you. Upon starting your shift, check the machine, just like how a captain checks the plane. Doing a visual inspection will let you see the issues and address them immediately before they become serious problems.

2. Take Precautions

The ram of your press brake should always be supported prior to doing any maintenance work. You can do this by placing the ram on two wooden blocks of equal sizes.

The electrical system need to be locked out in order to ensure that it cannot be engaged.

3. Check out the Hydraulic Circuit

The Hydraulic oil is a very important aspect. This is considered to be the lifeblood of the bending system. Thus, keeping it clean is a must. Also, filling the reservoir is highly critical. The oil level should also be checked periodically because when this becomes insufficient, it can cause erratic operation and may soon damage the hydraulic pump or even shorten the pump life.

4. Review your Mechanical Equipment

The mechanical components of a press brake contain: chain sprockets, piston bolts, and guides. All these should be checked twice a year, at a minimum.

The connection between the ram and pistons should be carefully and regularly checked. At the same time, all the bolts and screws should be checked if they have the right tightness. When they are loose, check by unscrewing them and replacing them when they are stretched. Moreover, modern press brakes need lubrication at a number of points.

5. Examine your Electrical Equipment

Make sure that all the electrical connections and switches in the main panel of your press brake are checked annually. When doing this to the electrical system, do not forget to turn off the main power switch first and then lock out of the system. But there are also some checks that can only be performed when the system is on. In this case, make sure that you take all the necessary safety precautions. Be careful when assembling or disassembling any part in the press. This should always be performed in clean environment.
